The star has donated the full amount of his £25k honor cash to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the Britain's independent live music spots.

Fender was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his recent tour to support numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation supported venues that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in major spaces backs the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to give his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when they received the trophy in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the band would contribute their cash to the organization the charity.

That year, rapper and singer the artist split her award between a few charities, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Two years ago, they contributed their funds to the local youth club that supported their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Also winners that year M People donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said singer Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched another person's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had saved two grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
