No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
