A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
